Teen Therapy in Tooele, Utah

Teenagers rarely announce that they are struggling. They get quieter, or louder. Grades slide. The door stays shut. A kid who used to tell you everything now answers in one word, and you are left guessing whether this is normal for fifteen or something that needs help.

Graceful Growth Clinic offers teen therapy and teen counseling for ages 12 to 18 at our office in Tooele, with after school, evening, and weekend appointments so getting help does not mean pulling your teen out of class or driving to Salt Lake.

When to Reach Out

Is It a Phase, or Does My Teen Need Counseling?

Some moodiness comes with the age. What is worth a conversation is a change that lasts more than a few weeks, shows up in more than one place, and starts getting in the way of school, sleep, or friendships. Parents in Tooele County most often call us about:

  • Worry, panic, or stomachaches before school
  • Sadness, irritability, or a teen who has stopped enjoying anything
  • Pulling away from friends, sports, or family
  • A sudden drop in grades or refusing to go to school
  • Sleeping far too much or hardly at all
  • Big reactions after a loss, a move, a divorce, or something frightening
  • Questions about identity, faith, or where they fit
  • Talk of self harm or not wanting to be here

You do not need to be sure before you call. One appointment with a teen therapist often ends in reassurance, and when it does not, you will leave with a plan.

What We Help With

What Teen Counseling Covers

Teen therapy here is built around what your teenager brings in, not a fixed program. These are the concerns we work with most.

Anxiety and School Stress

Constant worry, panic, perfectionism, social anxiety, and test pressure. See how we approach anxiety therapy.

Depression and Low Mood

Flat mood, irritability, hopelessness, and loss of interest. More on depression counseling.

Trauma and Grief

Hard experiences a teen has not been able to put down, including childhood trauma and the loss of someone close.

Identity and Belonging

LGBTQ+ affirming care, faith transitions, and the ordinary hard work of figuring out who you are in a small community.

Family Change and Conflict

Divorce, blended families, a parent's deployment, and arguments at home that never seem to settle.

Repetitive Worries and Habits

Intrusive thoughts, checking, and rituals that take up more and more of the day. Read about OCD therapy.

Our clinicians also work with teens who are having thoughts of self harm or suicide. If that is why you are here, tell us when you call so we can get your teen in quickly. If the danger is immediate, skip the appointment and use the crisis numbers further down this page.

What to Expect

What a First Visit Looks Like

Most teens walk in expecting a lecture. The first job of a teen therapist is to prove that is not what this is.

  1. You call or textMike takes a few details, verifies your insurance, and matches your teen with the clinician who fits what is going on.
  2. The first sessionA parent or guardian comes to the first visit to complete consent and share the history. Your teen also gets time alone with their therapist, because some things are easier to say without a parent in the room.
  3. A plan you all agree onWithin the first few sessions, your teen and their therapist name two or three goals in plain language. You will know what the plan is and how you can support it at home.
  4. Steady, regular sessionsSessions usually run about fifty minutes and their therapist will find the best solution for routine sessions based on the assessment. Progress with teenagers is rarely a straight line, and that is normal.

For Parents

How Parents Are Involved

Teen counseling works best when the adults at home are part of it without sitting in on every session. In practice that means regular check ins with your teen's therapist, a clear picture of the goals, and specific things to try at home.

It also means your teen gets some privacy. A fifteen year old who thinks every word goes straight to a parent will say very little. Your therapist shares themes, progress, and anything you need to know to keep your teen safe, and keeps the rest between them. Those privacy rules, and their limits, are explained to both of you at the first visit so nobody is surprised later.

If the strain reaches the whole household, we can bring more of the family into the room through family therapy and parenting support, or set up individual therapy for a parent who is carrying a lot of this alone.

How We Work

Therapy That Fits a Teenager

Therapy for teens is not adult therapy in a smaller chair. Teenagers are deciding whether to trust the person across from them, so the early sessions go at their pace. That is not a delay in treatment. It is the first part of it.

From there, your teen's therapist draws on the approach that fits:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy for the loop between anxious thoughts, feelings, and avoidance
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy for teens stuck fighting their own thoughts
  • Internal family systems and narrative therapy for making sense of mixed feelings and their own story
  • EMDR therapy in Tooele when a specific frightening event is driving the symptoms
  • Practical skills for calming down, sleeping, and getting through a hard hour at school

Care That Stays Local

Teen Counseling Without the Drive to Salt Lake

A weekly appointment forty five minutes away means a missed afternoon of school, a tired teenager, and a parent taking time off work. That drive is the reason a lot of families in this valley stop after three sessions.

We are at 134 W 1180 N, Suite 6 in Tooele, and we see teens from Tooele, Grantsville, Stansbury Park, Erda, Lake Point, Stockton, and the rest of Tooele County. Our clinicians live here. They know the schools, what shift work at the Tooele Army Depot does to a family schedule, and how thin privacy can feel for a teenager in a town where everyone knows everyone.

We are an in person practice first. When distance, weather, or a packed schedule gets in the way, ask about telehealth therapy so your teen can keep their appointment from home.

Good Questions

Questions Parents Ask About Teen Therapy

What ages do you see for teen therapy?

Our teen therapists see ages 12 to 18. We also see younger children from age three, and adults, so a child who starts here can stay with the same clinic as they grow.

What if my teen does not want to come?

That is common, and usually workable. Reluctance is often a fear of being in trouble or of something being wrong with them. Call us first and we will talk through how to bring it up. Many teens agree to try a few sessions once they know it is their time, not a punishment.

Will I know what my teen talks about in session?

You will know the goals, the general themes, and how things are going. Your teen's therapist will always tell you about a safety concern. The details stay private so your teen keeps talking, and the limits of that privacy are explained to both of you at the first visit.

How long does teen counseling take?

It depends on what your teen is working on. Some come for a couple of months around one problem. Others stay longer. Your teen's therapist will give you an honest estimate after the first few sessions rather than a number on day one.

Do you have appointments after school?

Yes. We are open Monday through Thursday from 9 AM to 7 PM, with evening and weekend times available by arrangement so therapy does not have to compete with class.

Can my teen do therapy by telehealth?

Yes, when it fits. One of our clinicians who sees teens works by telehealth only, and others can use it when getting to the office is a real barrier. Ask when you call.

Do you prescribe medication for teens?

No. We provide counseling and do not prescribe general psychiatric medication. If your teen already has a prescriber, or needs one, we coordinate with them.

Is teen therapy covered by insurance?

Usually. We accept most major Utah plans, including Select Health, PEHP, Utah Medicaid, and Tricare West Region. Call (385) 409-0363 and we will verify your teen's benefits before the first visit.
