When to Reach Out

Is It Time for Family Counseling?

Conflict is part of family life. It is worth getting help when the same problems keep repeating, when everyone feels worn down, or when a change in the family is getting harder instead of easier. Families in Tooele County most often call us about:

  • Constant arguing, yelling, or walking on eggshells at home
  • A child or teen whose behavior affects the whole household
  • Parents who disagree on rules, discipline, or screen time
  • Divorce, separation, or co-parenting between two homes
  • Blending families and new step relationships
  • A parent's deployment, return home, or long work shifts
  • Grief, illness, or a crisis the whole family is carrying
  • Feeling disconnected, like everyone lives separate lives

You do not need every family member on board before you call. Many families start with one or two people, and others join when they are ready.

What We Help With

What Family Therapy Covers

Family therapy here is shaped around what your family is facing, not a fixed program. These are the concerns we see most.

Communication and Conflict

Breaking the cycle of the same fights, learning to listen, and talking about hard things without anyone shutting down or blowing up. See how we help with relationship issues.

Parenting Support

Practical help with discipline, routines, big emotions, and staying calm when your child is not. Useful for parents of toddlers through teens.

Divorce and Co-Parenting

Helping children adjust to two homes and helping parents build a steadier co-parenting routine. Kids can also have their own space in child therapy or teen therapy.

Blended Families

Adjusting to new step relationships, different house rules, and loyalties that pull in more than one direction.

Military and Shift-Work Families

Deployments, reintegration, relocations, and schedules that leave little time together. Many families we see have a parent at Dugway or the Tooele Army Depot.

Grief and Family Stress

Working through a loss, an illness, or a crisis together. More on grief therapy.

If anyone in your family is talking about hurting themselves or not wanting to be here, tell us when you call so we can see you quickly. If the danger is immediate, use the crisis numbers further down this page.

What to Expect

How Family Therapy Starts

The first visit is not about deciding who is to blame. It is about understanding how your family works and what everyone wants to be different.

  1. You call or textMike takes a few details, verifies your insurance, and matches your family with the clinician who fits what is going on.
  2. The first sessionYour therapist meets with the family members who are coming, gathers history, and explains how sessions will work. Sometimes this starts with parents only.
  3. A plan you agree onWithin the first few sessions, your family and your therapist name a few goals in plain language, such as fewer blowups or a smoother bedtime.
  4. Sessions that fitYour therapist may meet with everyone together, with parents alone, or with one child, depending on what will help most. Session length and frequency are based on the assessment.

For Parents

Parenting Support When You Feel Stuck

Parenting is hard, and it gets harder when you are tired, stretched thin, or parenting differently than you were raised. Parenting support gives you a place to sort through what is working, what is not, and what to try next.

Sessions focus on practical tools: clear and consistent limits, routines that reduce daily battles, ways to respond to tantrums and talking back, and how to reconnect with a child who has pulled away. When parents are on the same page, kids usually feel the difference quickly.

If a parent is also carrying their own stress, anxiety, or depression, we can set up individual therapy alongside family work.

How We Work

Our Approach to Family Counseling

Family therapy looks at the patterns between people, not just one person's behavior. When one person in a family is struggling, everyone around them is affected, and changes in the family can help that person heal.

Your therapist draws on the approach that fits your family:

  • Family systems therapy to understand roles, patterns, and how each person affects the others
  • Parent coaching for limits, routines, and responding to big emotions
  • Communication and conflict skills the whole family can practice at home
  • Play-based sessions so younger children can take part in a way that makes sense to them
  • Trauma-informed care, including EMDR therapy, when a frightening event is affecting the family

Care That Stays Local

Family Counseling Close to Home

Getting a whole family to Salt Lake every week, around school, practices, and work shifts, is a lot to ask. For many families, that drive is why therapy stops before it has a chance to help.

We are at 134 W 1180 N, Suite 6 in Tooele, and we see families from Tooele, Grantsville, Stansbury Park, Erda, Lake Point, Stockton, and the rest of Tooele County. When schedules or distance get in the way, ask about telehealth therapy for parent sessions.

Good Questions

Questions About Family Therapy

Does the whole family need to come to every session?

No. Some sessions include everyone, some include parents only, and some include one child. Your therapist will recommend who should come based on your goals.

What if a family member does not want to come?

That is common. You can start with the people who are willing. Change in one part of the family often makes it easier for others to join later.

Can parents come without their kids?

Yes. Parenting support sessions are often just for parents and focus on tools you can use at home.

Do you work with co-parents who live in separate homes?

Yes. We can help co-parents build more consistent routines and communication for their children, as long as everyone can participate safely.

How long does family therapy take?

It depends on what your family is working on. Some families come for a few months around one concern, while others benefit from longer support. Your therapist will review progress with you regularly.

Do you have evening appointments?

Yes. We are open Monday through Thursday from 9 AM to 7 PM, with evening and weekend times available by arrangement.

Is family therapy covered by insurance?

Often, depending on your plan. We accept most major Utah plans, including Select Health, PEHP, Utah Medicaid, and Tricare West Region. Call (385) 409-0363 and we will verify your benefits before the first visit.
