Couples Therapy in Tooele, Utah

Most couples do not arrive after one enormous blowup. They arrive after two years of the same argument, worn down to the point where neither partner can remember what they are actually fighting about. The dishes are not about the dishes. The silence in the car is not about the car.

Couples therapy, also called marriage counseling, is where that pattern gets named out loud, in a room with someone whose job is not to pick a side. Graceful Growth Clinic offers couples counseling at our office on Vine Street in downtown Tooele, with evening and weekend appointments for partners who work opposite shifts.

The Basics

What Couples Therapy Is

Couples therapy is structured work on the relationship itself rather than on either person individually. Both partners attend, both talk, and the therapist's client is the thing between you. You will hear it called marriage counseling, relationship counseling, couple therapy, and couple counselling in British sources. Marriage counseling and couples therapy describe the same service, and no meaningful difference sits between the two terms. The labels shift, the work does not.

A marriage counseling clinician does three things. They slow the conversation down enough that you can actually hear each other. They surface the pattern underneath the content, which is almost always the real problem. And they teach both partners specific skills for repair, so you can do at home what you practiced in session.

What a good therapist will not do is referee. Nobody wins couples counseling. If you are coming in to have a professional confirm that your partner is the problem, the first session will be a disappointment.

No Threshold Required

When It Is Time to Call

There is no threshold you have to cross first. Waiting for things to get bad enough before calling a marriage counseling office is the single most common mistake couples make, and research on relationship distress is consistent that most couples wait years longer than they should. Common reasons partners in Tooele County reach out:

  • The same argument on repeat with no resolution
  • Communication that has turned into criticism, defensiveness, stonewalling, or contempt
  • An affair, an emotional affair, or a discovery that broke trust
  • Distance that crept in slowly after kids, a deployment, or a job change
  • Sexual disconnection or mismatched desire in an otherwise solid relationship
  • One partner considering separation while the other wants to fight for it
  • Money conflict, parenting conflict, or in law conflict that never settles
  • A faith transition that changed what one partner believes and left the other unsure where that leaves them
  • Wanting more from a relationship that is fine but flat

That last one counts. Marriage counseling is not only crisis repair. Plenty of partners come in with a functional marriage and a goal of higher relationship satisfaction, and that work tends to move quickly.

Inside the Room

What Happens in a Couples Counseling Session

The first appointment is joint. Both partners describe what brought you in and what each of you wants to be different. Your therapist is listening for the cycle, not for evidence.

Many clinicians then meet with each partner alone for a session of individual therapy before returning to joint work. That is standard practice, and it lets each of you say things you might soften in front of the other. What you share is used to inform the work, and your therapist will explain up front how confidentiality between those sessions is handled at our clinic.

From there, a typical therapy session runs about an hour and follows a shape. You bring the week. Your therapist stops the cycle when it starts up live in the room, which is the most useful thing that happens in couples work, because the pattern is right there where all three of you can look at it. Then you practice something different, and you take that home as homework.

Most couples come weekly at first and space marriage counseling appointments out as things stabilize. Some are done in three months. Others stay longer, especially where trauma, betrayal, or a long history of resentment is involved.

Methods We Draw From

Approaches Used in Couples Work

Marriage counseling is not one method. The three best supported frameworks in the field are worth knowing by name so you can ask what your clinician actually uses.

The Gottman method couples therapy model.

Built on decades of observational research into what distinguishes stable marriages from unstable ones. Heavy on assessment, conflict management skills, and building friendship and shared meaning.

Emotionally focused therapy.

Works from attachment science. It treats conflict as protest about disconnection and helps partners reach for each other directly instead of through criticism or withdrawal.

Imago relationship therapy.

Uses a structured dialogue process and connects present day conflict to unmet needs formed earlier in life.

Good relationship therapy is usually integrative rather than purist. Our clinicians draw on the approach that fits your situation and will tell you plainly what they are using and why. Ask. An experienced therapist has no reason to be vague about it.

Focus Areas

What We Work On With Couples

  • Communication breakdown and the relationship issues underneath it
  • Trust rebuilding after infidelity
  • Intimacy, desire differences, and reconnection
  • Parenting alignment, blended family friction, and family issues
  • Life transitions, deployment cycles, and long or opposite work schedules
  • Recovery from an affair, addiction fallout, or a major breach
  • Grief and loss carried by one or both partners
  • LGBTQ couples, affirming and without a translation step first
  • Faith transitions and mixed belief marriages
  • Individual trauma that keeps landing inside the relationship

That last one comes up often. When one partner has a trauma history, the relationship absorbs it, and couples counseling can stall until that gets addressed. We provide trauma therapy including EMDR in the same building, so one partner can do individual work while joint sessions continue rather than pausing everything for six months.

Sexual disconnection sits inside most of the intimacy work we do. Certified sex therapy is its own specialty, so if you need a sex therapist for a specific sexual dysfunction, tell us and we will refer you to one. Sex and intimacy counseling as part of broader couples work is squarely within what we do.

When You Are Not Both Sure

Marriage Counseling When One Partner Is Unsure

The hardest version of this is when one partner has a foot out the door and the other is trying to hold it closed. Standard marriage counseling assumes both people want the relationship. When that assumption is wrong, the sessions go sideways fast.

There is a specific approach for it, called discernment work, and the goal is different. Instead of jumping to repair, you spend a short, defined number of sessions getting clarity on which direction to go and why, with no pressure toward either answer. Some couples come out of it committed to a real attempt at marriage therapy. Some come out choosing to separate with less damage and better co parenting. Both are legitimate outcomes, and you deserve to reach one on purpose rather than by exhaustion.

If that is where you are, say so when you call.

Before the Wedding

Premarital Counseling

Premarital counseling is the same work done before the wedding instead of five years after it. You cover money, in laws, sex, faith, kids, division of labor, and how each of you handles conflict, which is the single best predictor of how the marriage goes. It is short, it is practical, and it is far cheaper than marriage counseling after a decade of resentment.

If you are engaged and want this kind of work, ask when you call and we will set it up.

Format

Online Couples Therapy and In Person Work

Online couples therapy grew enormously in the last few years, and for some couples it is genuinely the right call. If one partner travels for work, if you are stationed apart, or if childcare makes a weekday appointment impossible, online therapy is far better than no therapy at all. Online therapy also removes the drive, which is the reason a lot of couples in this county never start.

It also has real limits with couples specifically. A therapist reading the room loses a lot through a screen. Body language, who leans away, the pause before an answer, all of it gets compressed. Two partners sharing one laptop in the same house often means one of them is not speaking freely. Online therapy platforms that match you with whoever is available in your state also make it harder to build the working relationship that couples work depends on.

Graceful Growth Clinic is primarily an in person practice, and for couples we think that is a feature rather than a limitation. Being in the same room, in the same chairs, in a space that is neither of your kitchens changes the conversation. That said, if travel is a genuine barrier, ask us about telehealth options rather than skipping care. We would rather adapt than lose you to a Salt Lake waitlist or to another year of the same argument.

Fit Matters Most

Choosing the Right Relationship Therapist

Credentials confuse people, so here is the plain version. A licensed marriage and family therapist, or LMFT, trains specifically in relational systems. A licensed clinical mental health counselor and a licensed clinical social worker are equally qualified to provide marriage counseling in Utah, and many have extensive couples training. What matters more than the letters is whether the clinician actively works with couples and how often.

You may also see practices staffed by an associate therapist working under supervision alongside fully licensed clinicians. Associate level clinicians are often excellent and are usually more available. If seeing the senior therapist in the building matters to you, ask, and we will be straight about who has what experience and what the wait looks like.

Finding the right relationship therapist is mostly about fit. Both partners should feel the therapist is fair. If one of you consistently feels ganged up on after three or four sessions, that is information worth raising in the room, and worth switching over if it does not resolve.

Meet the Team

Our Couples Therapists in Tooele

Several clinicians here work with couples, which means we can match you rather than assign you to whoever has an open slot.

The Graceful Growth Clinic team in Tooele, Utah

Cari Davis, CSW

Couples work and EMDR, with evening and weekend availability for partners on opposite schedules.

Kellie Korth, CSW

LGBTQ affirming care, teens and families, and work with faith transitions inside marriages.

Miriam Buell, LCMHC

Founder of the clinic, EMDR certified, with years of experience supporting military families and the strain deployment cycles put on a marriage.

We also offer family therapy and family counseling when the issue reaches past the two of you, and a family therapist on our team can bring the kids into the work when that is what the situation needs. We do not currently run group therapy or multi day couples intensive retreats. If a couples intensive is what you are after, tell us and we will point you toward one.

The Honest Answer

Does Couples Therapy Actually Work

Yes, for most couples who show up honestly and do the work between sessions. Decades of outcome research support couples counseling as an effective intervention, and both the Gottman and emotionally focused traditions have substantial evidence behind them.

It works less well in a few specific situations, and an honest clinician says so. It does not work when one partner is already fully decided and using sessions to soften the exit. It does not work when active untreated addiction is driving the behavior. And it is not appropriate when there is ongoing intimate partner violence, where joint sessions can increase risk and individual safety planning comes first. If that is your situation, call us anyway and we will help you find the right resource.

You also cannot outsource it. Two hours a month in a therapy room will not overcome six days a week of the same habits at home.

Coverage

Insurance and Cost

Graceful Growth Clinic accepts most major Utah plans, including Select Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Optum, Aetna, PEHP, Humana, GEHA, DMBA, Utah Medicaid, Utah Medicare Part B, and Tricare West Region. HSA, FSA, church paid coverage, and cash pay all work here.

  • PEHP
  • Humana

  • DMBA

Coverage for relationship counseling varies more than it does for individual therapy, since some plans treat it differently from other therapy services. Call (385) 409-0363 before you book and Mike will verify your specific benefits so you know what you owe before you walk in.

Tricare matters in this county. With Dugway Proving Ground, the Tooele Army Depot, and Guard families across the valley, a lot of the couples we see are military connected, and we know how those benefits and those deployment strains work.

Good Questions

Common Questions About Couples Counseling

What if my partner will not come?

Come alone. Individual work on your side of the pattern changes the system more than people expect, and reluctant partners often join after a few sessions once therapy stops sounding like a trial.

How long does couples therapy take?

Many couples see meaningful change in twelve to twenty sessions. Betrayal recovery and long standing relationship challenges take longer. Your therapist will give you a realistic picture after the assessment sessions.

Will the therapist take sides?

No. A couples therapist who takes sides is not doing the job. Being held accountable for a specific behavior is not the same as being blamed, and there is a difference you will feel in the room.

Can we do couples therapy if we are not married?

Yes. Dating, engaged, long term partners, and post divorce co parents all do this work. Marriage is not the requirement, an intimate relationship is.

Do you offer online couples therapy?

We are primarily in person and think that serves couples better. Ask about telehealth if distance or schedules make in person genuinely impossible.

Is what we say confidential?

Yes, within the standard legal limits that apply to all mental health care. Your clinician will walk through those limits and explain how information from individual sessions is handled in joint work.

Do we need a specialty couples center for this?

No. A dedicated couples center in Salt Lake is an option, but a licensed therapist who regularly works with couples, forty minutes closer to home, on a schedule you can actually keep, will usually serve you better than a longer drive you stop making by week five.
